ABSTRACT

To make hybrid rice, male sterile parent lines are needed to prepared as female parent. One of the method to obtained pollen sterile is by using PGMS (Photoperiod Sensitive Gene Male Sterility). PGMS is genic male sterile which is influence by photoperiodism. Long irradiation above the critical threshold just before heading (flowering) in rice cause by pollen sterility. The purpose of this study are to determine whether the long photoperiod application gave effect in producing of pollen sterile in several varieties of rice. The research was conducted in a Randomized Block Design with 2 factors, the periode of radiation and rice varieties (9 varieties). The result showed that the periode of radiations 20 and 25 days before heading (flowering) by long radiation for 14 hours was not effect in producing of pollen sterility and grain sterility. The percentage of both were under 30% it’s mean the result were classified as complete fertile. The research concluded that long irradiation before heading (flowering)  time in rice have not been able to obtained sterility of pollen.
