SUMMARY Translating an E-Book Entitled Operating System Concept Ninth Edition Page 92 until 115, Oktaviana Nikmah Wulan Damayanti, F31151614, 2018, 33 Pages, Language, Communication and Tourism Department, Politeknik Negeri Jember, Titik Ismailia, S.Pd, M.Pd. (Supervisor). English was known as international language, that all of countries use English in communicating to convey a message, information, opinion or idea to other who have language differences. Every university was also increase the learning facilities means that universities provide learning materials such as books, national and international journals, scientific magazine, electronic journals, e-books are complete and adequate as a supporting media in teaching and learning process. Based on my interview with lecturer and some students of Information Technology department, Politeknik Negeri Jember was the one of university that used English-based learning materials in lecturing process, one of them at Information Technology department. Commonly, learning materials that students used related with personal computer many used English in it. So that, learning materials in Information Technology departments using English language such as e-book entitled Operating System Concepts Ninth Edition. Based on interview result, the problem was on the understanding and limitation of vocabulary from students to catch the whole information from this e-book. The point was when lecturer delivered the material become less effective and many passive students because the whole content in this e-book using English, thus making students less interested to read and understand this e-book. Based on the importance of appropriateness between the uses of language with skill of students, it could be concluded that translating e-book was needed to improve teaching and learning process. Based on the discussion between the writer with the supervisor, then in translating process the writer used the process by Nida and Taber (1974) and translating procedure by Newmark (1988). There are three process, that are: analyzing, transferring, restructuring, and the writer add evaluating process in this process. The writer also used some procedure by Newmark that are: sysnonym, transference, and shift or transposition. From translating process, the writer got a lot of knowledge and experience such as got the knowledge about translation deeply, make more writers spend time reading and discussing new things and build relation with other people. Beside got knowledge and experience, the writer also found some problems while doing translating such as difficulties in understand the theory related to processes and procedures translation and difficulties in decided which one the procedure that need to used in translating process. However, the writer conclude that translating e-book entiled “Operating System Concept Nint Edition” as final project was very beneficial to increase the comprehension for the writer, students and lecturer of Information Technology department. The writer believed that the knowledge related to translation will be useful for the writer’s future and the user of this e-book could understand the content and also make an easier the steps to operate system programming.
